‘Skill up India’ online education portal launched in Gujarat

In Gujarat, a free education portal ‘Skill Up India’ (SUI) has been launched, by ‘Code for India’ (CFI) based at Silicon Valley, it’s a network of Indian-origin technology professionals. CFI is the coming together of US-based technologists, designers, and engineers to volunteer their time and talent to give back to the community.
CFI’s Gujarat chapter, in partnership with iCreate, IIT Gandhinagar, IIM Ahmadabad, CIIE and US-India Business Council (USIBC), launched the portal. “Gujrat chapter of CFI today launched its education portal for anybody wishing to learn and teach via internet”, said Karl Mehta, founder of ‘Code for India’ and CEO of Silicon Valley educational technology company EdCast.
“The portal will be like a virtual classroom, where facilities like putting publications along with the courses on various subjects will take place and the people can access it through internet for free,” said Mehta. “Skill Up India is part of the new movement in the country to help our youth with free access to high quality education through online and mobile courses essential to re-focus our workforce to meet the demands of global economy,” he added.
Signing up to the courses offered are not restricted, or blocked by any selection criteria on SUI. According to Mehta it is a “casual and open way of learning, where anybody can subscribe to,” so there are no criteria for subscription. SUI will work with institutes like IIT Gandhinagar and IIM Ahmadabad, in the beginning, where the course will be put. In addition to this, anyone wishing to offer a course can also publish it on the portal. Although, the content and the course will be checked before it is put up on the website.
