Ministry of HRD (MHRD) has introduced a Bill in the Parliament to establish 20 more Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIITs) in various parts of the country. It has also declared the four existing ones as ‘institutions of national importance’.
The four existing IIITs situated at Allahabad, Gwalior, Jabalpur and Kancheepuram have been accorded the status of ‘institutions of national importance’ to give them more administrative autonomy.
As per the Indian Institutes of Information Technology Bill, 2013, MHRD would establish the 20 new IIITs under the Public Private Partnership (PPP) mode partnering with the state governments and the industry.
As per the Bill the objective behind establishing 20 new IIITs is, “To declare certain institutions of information technology to be institutions of national importance with a view to develop new knowledge in information technology and to provide manpower of global standards for the information technology industry and to establish other Institutions of Information Technology and to provide for certain other matters connected with such institutions or incidental thereto.”
As per the Bill the total cost of establishing 20 new institutes will be around Rs 2,808.71 crores.
The establishment of each IIIT would cost around Rs 128 crore, of which 50 per cent would be borne by Centre 35 per cent by state government 35 per cent and remaining 15 per cent by partnering industry.
The Bill aims to make the IIITs emerge as one amongst the foremost institutions in information technology and allied field of knowledge and empower the nation to the forefront of global context.
The Bill empowers state governments to establish institutes for it needs to identify and industry partner and submit the proposal to the MHRD.
