UGC may take over the IGNOU’s hold over Distance Education Council

The Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) and is called as country’s largest open learning university. In an aggressive move taken by University Grant Commission (UGC), there are likely chances for IGNOU to lose its hold from the Distance Education Council (DEC) hold and pass on the control UGC.
The next board of management meeting is expected to be held on August 4th, 2012, in which the baton of DEC will be passed on to UGC as an interim arrangement. If that happens, IGNOU will lose the regulatory powers over Open and Distance Learning (ODL) in India to UGC.
Meanwhile, former DEC directors and other IGNOU officials are saying this will be a regressive step and such changes can only takes place after changing the IGNOU Act by the Parliament, and that the board is not authorized for such decision.
