MHRD: Huge faculty Crunch in the Education Sector

Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) has highlighted the gross faculty crunch in the higher education. The presentation presented for the same focused on the faculty crunch at Central Universities, IITs, IIMs NITs and IIITs.

Central universities has 16,602 sanctioned faculty positions and out of which 6,542 positions are lying vacant. In case of IITs, 15 IITs have 1,611 vacancies against the total strength of 5,092 faculty positions sanctioned. The case of IIMs is also parallel, in all the 13 IIMs have to fill 111 vacancies out of 638 positions. Four Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIITs) have almost 50 per cent vacancy as 104 out of 224 positions are vacant. National Institutes of Technology (NITs) across 30 states have 1,487 vacant of the total 4,291 positions. Indian Institutes of Science Education & Research which are less than a decade-old with five branches are also facing the problem of faculty crunch as out of the total strength of 518 they have 131 positions vacant.
