IIM Ranchi: A Big Move towards Gender Diversity

Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Ranchi has shown a great move towards bringing gender diversity in its regular management programmes. It had no girl student in its last batch, has admitted a total of 42 girl candidates to its PGDM and PGDHRM programmes for the academic year 2012-13. Post Graduate Diploma in Management (PGDM) & Post Graduate Diploma in Human Resources Management (PGDHRM) at IIM Ranchi offer masters degree. This year IIM Ranchi began its third batch. There was not a single girl student in the regular two-year programmes at the campus in the last batch. The first batch of the IIM Ranchi had, however, only one girl student.
According to Dr. M J Xavier, IIM Ranchi Director, the step to increase female students in the campus is aimed at fostering and strengthening the inclusive approach of IIM Ranchi in every aspect of its functioning. It will bring gender balance at the campus. The female participation in the programmes will also help create an inclusive environment in the classroom. Out of total 162 students admitted this year at IIM Ranchi in its two-year regular programmes i.e. PGDM & PGDHRM, 22 candidates in PGDHRM programme and 20 candidates in PGDM programme are females, respectively. Once the institute struck a fairly good gender balance for our PGDHRM programme, it approached potential female candidates for the PGDM batch also. For this, we connected potential female candidates over phone to those female candidates who had already taken admission to our PGDHRM programme, which helped us to convince the girl students about the facilities, security concerns, and many other issues which they had concern about, he adds. Also, the institute will continue to take steps towards encouraging the female candidates to join the institute. He hoped that the trend that has started this year will continue in the coming academic session as well.
