Souvik Bhattacharya has been appointed the new vice chancellor of Jadavdpur University. He remained a teacher of mechanical engineering in Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur. Bhattacharyya has spent his five formative years (1976 to 1981) as a student of the university before moving to the USA for further studies. he was informed about the appointment by the higher education department on Tuesday evening. A series of formalities needs to be completed as yet.
According to the sources, he stayed in the USA for seven years and completed MS and PhD from University of University of Cincinnati, Ohio, US. He returned to the country and joined IIT-Kgp as a teacher since 1991. Also been a dean of students affairs since past 3 years, has worked with 9300 students on campus.
For the appointment, the three member search committee was chaired by Gobardhan Mehta, former director of Indian Institute of Sciences in Bangalore. The other two members were M Anandakrishnan, former vice-chancellor of Madras University and present member of board of governors of IIT, Kanpur and Srikumar Bandopadhyay, chairman of Energy Atomic Commission.
