Prof. Ved Prakash

The ministry of human resource development, (MHRD) has appointed Prof. Ved Prakash as chairman of University Grants Commission (UGC). Prof Ved Prakash replaces Prof Sukhadeo Thorat, whose term as chairman, UGC ended on February 6, 2011. Prior to being appointed as UGC chairman, Prof Ved Prakash was serving as vice chairman of the Commission since May 2009.

Prof Ved Prakash, an eminent academician, has also served as Vice Chancellor, National University of Educational Planning and Administration (NUEPA) from 2005 to 2009. Before that he was secretary, University Grants Commission (UGC) from 2002 to 2005.

Prof. Ved Prakash also served as Adviser, Education, Planning Commission, Government of India, where he was actively associated in the finalization of the plans and projects of the Education Sector. As Professor & Head, Department of Educational Measurement and Evaluation, NCERT; as Associate Professor, Institute of Banking Personnel Selection, Bombay, and as Joint Director, Staff Selection Commission, Government of India, New Delhi, he had been instrumental in designing multiple types of Achievement & Aptitude Tests relevant both for identification of talent and personnel selection, as also for conducting nation-wide Achievement Surveys.

A recipient of US Fulbright Post-Doctoral Fellowship, he had been a visiting Faculty at Humanities Research Group, University of Windsor, Canada and a Guest Faculty at Harvard Institute of International Development (HIID), Harvard University, Cambridge. He also worked as a consultant for the World Bank in Kathmandu, Nepal. Prof. Ved Prakash, who has participated in several national and international conferences, has authored a number of books, articles and research papers.

While he was Professor and Head at National Council for Educational Research and Training (NCERT), Prof Prakash suggested various measures and reforms in higher education, including reforms in the examination system related to assessment and evaluation.

    How can an aspirant senior citizen with huge independent published research work in refereed journals carrying ISSN be enrolled for a phd degree under UGC. eg. myself. Then am I exempted from the entrance test for the phd program. Kindly consider such cases while framing new rules.
